Preparing for pest control in Dubai mostly means three things: put food and anything that touches food away, clear access to the places the technician needs to treat, and plan where children, pets and fish will be. What you need to do depends on the treatment, so ask the company for its preparation list when you book. A bed bug visit needs far more work than a cockroach gel visit.
There is no Dubai Municipality preparation checklist that we could find. The steps below come from marketplace and company guidance and UAE press reports, each dated. Where they disagree, follow the written instructions from your own pest control company.
What should you ask the company when you book?
Ask these before the day, in writing (WhatsApp or email is fine), so you have a record:
- Which pest and which method? Gel, spray, or both. Many visits combine them.
- What do I need to prepare? Ask for their list. Urban Company's Dubai service pages, for example, ask customers to empty the kitchen for a kitchen-only cockroach treatment and to empty the space for fly control.
- Product names and safety data sheets. Your doctor or vet may want them.
- How long to stay out, and which rooms. See how long to stay out after pest control for the ranges quoted in UAE press.
- Is a follow-up visit included, and when?
- Their Dubai Municipality listing. Check the name against the current list before the visit, using our guide on how to check a company is DM-approved. On the day, ask to see the technician's Pest Control ID card.
Preparation checklist by treatment type
This table summarises what the sources below recommend. It is a starting point, not a rule.
| Treatment | Kitchen and food | Furniture and belongings | People, pets, fish | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cockroach gel (often kitchen and bathroom) | Clear the kitchen or the cupboards being treated; put food in sealed containers | Little moving needed; leave access to hinges, sink cut-out and behind appliances | Keep children and pets away from gel spots | Urban Company service pages (undated); ServiceMarket, Mar 2024 |
| General spray (whole flat or villa) | Food, dishes and utensils out of sight in airtight containers | Furniture usually stays put; declutter floors and skirting | Kids, pets out of treated areas; cover fish tanks | Gulf News, May 2024; ServiceMarket, Mar 2024 |
| Bed bugs | Normal food precautions | Hot-wash and bag bedding and clothes; move furniture from walls; do not carry items outside | Bag toys; plan where everyone sleeps | ServiceMarket bed bug guide, Jan 2024 |
| Ants or flies | Empty the treated space; food away | Clear the areas where you see trails | Pets and bowls away | Urban Company service pages (undated) |
| Termites (villa) | Ask the company | Expect inspection of wood, frames and garden; ask what access they need | Ask the company | See our termite guide |
How do you prepare the kitchen for cockroach treatment?
The kitchen is where most cockroach work happens, so it needs the most attention.
- Put all food away. ServiceMarket's preparation guide (modified March 2024) says to store food and utensils so chemicals cannot reach them, and adds that leftover food can draw pests away from the bait. Gulf News (May 2024) advised airtight containers.
- Clear the cupboards being treated. For a kitchen-only treatment, Urban Company asks for an empty kitchen. If you are not sure which cupboards, empty the ones under the sink and around the cooker first.
- Move dishes, cutlery and chopping boards out of the kitchen or into closed cupboards the technician will not treat.
- Empty all bins, including the one under the sink.
- Unplug and pull out small appliances if the company asks. Cockroaches hide behind fridges, microwaves and kettles.
- Do a normal clean, not a deep clean with strong products. Wipe crumbs and grease. A clean surface helps bait work because roaches have less else to eat.
Gel or spray: does it change what you do?
Yes. Gel is placed in small dots in cracks, hinges and behind appliances. Spray is applied to wider surfaces such as skirting boards and floor edges. Urban Company's bathroom cockroach service, for example, describes spray for visible pests and gel for hidden ones.
- Gel visit: less clearing needed, but you must not wipe the gel spots afterwards. Ask the technician to show or list where the gel is.
- Spray visit: more clearing of floors and skirting, and a longer time out of the room. Keep toys, shoes and bags off the floor.
- Fogging or smoke: thermal fogging and smoke insecticides were banned inside flats and residential buildings in Dubai in July 2012, according to Khaleej Times. If someone offers this indoors, stop and ask questions. Tablets or "bombs" are illegal and deadly: see why aluminium phosphide is banned.
How do you prepare for bed bug treatment?
Bed bugs need the most preparation. ServiceMarket's bed bug guide (modified January 2024) lists these steps:
- Wash clothes, sheets, pillowcases, towels and soft toys in hot water, then dry on the hottest setting the fabric allows.
- Keep washed items in sealed plastic bags, apart from unwashed ones, until the treatment has worked.
- Move furniture away from walls so the technician can inspect. Leave heavy pieces for the professionals.
- Declutter, bagging anything you do not need.
- Check books and electronics for signs, and set aside anything affected.
- Do not carry furniture or clothes outside the home, because that can spread bed bugs.
Urban Company's service pages also ask customers to remove and wash affected furnishings and clothing before a bed bug visit. Bed bug treatment usually needs more than one visit, so ask about the follow-up date before you start.
What about children, pregnancy and pets?
We cannot tell you any treatment is safe for you. Ask a professional.
- Children: Gulf News (May 2024) said to keep children away from the treated area during treatment. ServiceMarket suggests sealing toys, bedding and clothing. An entomologist quoted in the Gulf News piece said some children may be allergic to certain products.
- Pregnancy, babies, asthma: tell the company when you book, and speak to your doctor before the visit with the product names.
- Cats and dogs: remove bowls, beds and litter trays from treated rooms and keep pets away. If a pet has fleas or ticks, Gulf News's 2024 piece said a vet should treat the animal. Ask your vet if your pet is young, old or unwell. Our guide to pets and cockroach gel has more.
- Birds and small animals: tell the company and ask your vet. Moving them out during treatment is a common precaution.
- Fish tanks: ServiceMarket recommends covering nearby tanks. Also ask the technician whether to switch off the air pump or move the tank.
If anyone feels unwell during or after a treatment, get fresh air and call 999 or seek urgent medical help.
Do you need to tell your neighbours and building management?
Our two press sources differ slightly:
- A 2018 Gulf News explainer said to warn neighbours so they can keep doors and windows closed.
- The May 2024 Gulf News piece said notice is usually not needed unless common areas are treated, when building management should tell tenants.
In practice, tell building management first. Many towers need contractor details in advance or limit visit times. Then tell neighbours who share your corridor or AC ducts. A shared problem treated in one flat often moves next door, which is one reason roaches can return: see still seeing cockroaches after pest control.
A simple timeline for treatment day
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| When booking | Get the prep list, product names and re-entry time in writing; check the DM list |
| Day before | Clear kitchen, bag food and toys, hot-wash bedding (bed bugs), empty bins |
| Morning of the visit | Take pets and children out or to a closed room; cover the fish tank |
| During the visit | Check the ID card; ask where gel and spray went |
| Afterwards | Follow the written re-entry time; ventilate; leave gel spots alone |
What to check before you act
- Ask the company for its own preparation list for your pest and method.
- Check the company name on the Dubai Municipality approved list.
- Clear and seal food, dishes and toys; empty bins.
- Plan for children, pets and fish; talk to your doctor or vet if unsure.
- Tell building management and neighbours on shared ducts.
- Refuse fogging, smoke or "bomb" treatments indoors.
Questions people ask
Do I need to empty my kitchen cupboards before pest control?
For a kitchen cockroach treatment, often yes. Urban Company's kitchen-only cockroach service asks customers to empty the kitchen first. For other visits, ask the company which cupboards need clearing.
Should I clean before pest control comes?
Yes, a general tidy and decluttering helps, because it removes hiding places and lets the technician reach cracks and corners. Empty the bins and put food away. Avoid a deep clean straight after a gel treatment unless the company says it is fine.
Do I need to move furniture before pest control?
Usually not for general treatment, according to company staff quoted by Gulf News in 2024. For bed bugs, move furniture away from walls so the technician can inspect, and leave heavy items for the professionals.
What should I do with my fish tank during pest control?
Tell the company before the visit and cover the tank. ServiceMarket's preparation guide recommends covering nearby fish tanks. Ask whether to switch off the air pump and what the product label says about fish.
Do I need to tell my neighbours about pest control?
It is good practice, especially in towers with shared corridors or AC ducts. A 2018 Gulf News explainer said to warn neighbours so they can keep doors and windows shut. Tell building management too.
